Trick-or-Treat Stats: Leaving a Bowl of Candy out for the Night

Brittany and I were at the UNC football game on Halloween, so we set out a large bowl of candy asking each person to only take two pieces. I missed seeing everyone come by, so I checked the Ring camera this morning to pull together a few stats for the night…

We received 65 Trick-or-Treaters between 5:30 and 8:30, and gave out a total of 208 pieces of candy

Key Takeaways:

  • We provided candy to 65 Trick-or-Treaters in total, split across 33 groups. I didn’t add our house to the official neighborhood Trick-or-Treating map, although we do have a very visible house on the corner and kept the lights on.
  • The first group arrived at 5:54pm, and the last group came through at 8:26pm. The busiest window was 6-7pm, which represented about half of all Trick-or-Treaters.
  • 208 pieces of candy were taken in total. We bought 252 pieces, ate 12, kept 12 for later, and had 30 pieces left at the end of the night. We spent a total of $47.89 at Sam’s Club and Target.
  • The average person took 3.2 pieces of candy. If I took out one outlier, I think the average would drop below 3.
  • Surprisingly, the most popular candy was cheese puffs (all 32 were taken). The least popular was LifeSavers (only 11/30 were taken). Skittles and Snickers were both more popular than Starburst.

Wrapping up:

Our neighborhood is awesome. 100% of Trick-or-Treaters wore a costume, lots of people said “thank you” to the Ring camera, and people largely followed our request to take two pieces of candy per person. I can’t wait for next year when our Halloween crew will be a little bit bigger!
